Flour Tortillas

Yields: 1 Serving Difficulty: Easy Prep Time: 10 Mins Cook Time: 10 Mins Total Time: 20 Mins

If you look in your cabinet right now I bet you have flour, baking powder, salt, and olive oil. Just add water and now you have everything to make tortillas. If you have ever watched someone like I watched my Abuelita, making tortillas it may seem intimidating, but they’re easier than you think!

0/10 Instructions
  • In a large bowl, add 2 cups of flour, 1 tsp baking powder, and ½ tsp salt. Combine using a fork.
  • In the center of the dry mix, add 2 tbsp oil. You can use vegetable oil, avocado oil, lard, or olive oil. Start to slowly mix together with a fork.
  • While mixing oil and dry ingredients, slowly add in ¾ cups of WARM water and combine until dough forms.
  • On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic. This should take about 5 minutes.
  • Roll dough into and ball and cover with a cloth or plastic wrap. Let rest for at least 30 minutes or up to 2 hours.
  • Once rested, cut dough into 8 pieces and roll each piece of dough into a ball.
  • Flour your surface and use a rolling pin to roll each ball of dough into an 8in circle. To make this easier, I highly recommend a tortilla press.
  • Preheat a large flat skillet over medium heat. I recommend using a cast iron griddle.
  • Place flat tortilla on the pan and cook for about 30 seconds. Flip and cook for another 30 seconds. Air bubbles forming is a great sign!
  • Repeat with remaining. Place your tortillas in a warmer until time to eat.

Notes

  • When dividing your dough into 8 pieces, the easiest way is to divide the ball in half to make two pieces, then half those pieces to make four pieces, and lastly half each piece again to make eight equal pieces of dough.
  • A tortilla press makes flattening dough balls easy and coming out perfect every time.
  • I highly recommend using a cast iron griddle for cooking your tortillas. Get yours here.
  • To keep your tortillas warm until it's time to eat, get yourself a tortilla warmer.
